7 Things We've Learned About Chakras

Get the scoop on the main energy points in your body.

This past year, Foot-Joy has been on a learning journey. Now, we would love to discuss all the insights we've gained with you! To kick off this knowledge share, we wanted to provide some info about the system of chakras in our bodies, and some methods for tapping into these energy points for better health and wellness.

  • Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means "wheel" in English.According to Hinduism and Buddhism, if you could see a chakra,  it would resemble a spinning wheel or disc.

Bonus learning: In Spanish, they are called Ojos Vens or "eyes of light".

  • There are Major (also called Primary), Minor and Mini Chakras. The major chakras are the traditional wheel/circle and about 3-4" in diameter; minor chakras are 1-2" in diameter; and minis are less than 1" in diameter. Bonus learning: Other visual representations of major chakras include lotus flowers, suns, moons, and other shapes that resemble and orb.

  •  In Buddhism, there are 4 primary Chakras, while in Hinduism, there are 7. Across the world,  a variety of cultures, religions, and peoples believe in energy systems. Many of these systems resemble Buddhist and Hindu chakra philosophy but they also have some distinct differences. Bonus learning: Running through the chakras is an energy channel, which allows the energy to flow from one place to another.

  •  The 7 Chakra system is the most well-known and talked about in the western world. In this system are the Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown chakras. Each chakra is associated with a color, an area and organs in your body system, and a deeper emotional/spiritual meaning. We won't go into that level of detail in this blog, but we're happy to chat about it at your next reflexology. Bonus learning: The 4 chakra system includes Navel, Throat, Heart, and Crown, and according to Master Choa Kok Sui's Pranic Healing, there are 11 chakras.

  •  There are many ways to cleanse and clear the Chakras. When your chakras are blocked or full of negative energy, you may feel drained, run down, and just plain not like yourself. Activities that can help you get the positive energy flowinginclude connecting to the elements associated with each chakra, surrounding yourself with chakra colors and eating foods those colors, speaking kindly to yourself through affirmations, doing specific yoga poses, meditating, crystals, sound healing, and more. Bonus learning: Another awesome method for getting your energy in sync is to circle over the chakra 12 times--this gets the wheel spinning--and then tap over the chakra 3 times--this brings in the positivity or whatever your system needs.

  •  Using Chakras with affirmations is a powerful practice. Chakra affirmations can be used during meditation or just casually during your day--the important thing is to say or think

them with an intent of activating and balancing your energy centers. Bonus learning: Adding crystals to your chakra affirmation practice can really amplify it. For example, try holding  rose quartz crystal over your heart chakra while repeating the phrases, "I am compassionate. I am generous. I am loving."

  • Seed (or Bija) mantras are one syllable sounds that can help you feel more connected with a Chakra. Starting in your lowest voice and moving up the scale, try chanting these sounds  to activate the vitality and potential of each chakra. Root--Lam ; Sacral--Vam; Solar Plexus--Ram; Heart--Yam ; Throat--Ham; Third Eye--Om; Crown--Om. Bonus learning: How many times should you repeat the sound? At least 3 to 4 and until you feel a sense of connectivity between the sound and chakra.
